LG G5 Starts Receiving Android Oreo Update with New Features

South Korean tech giant LG has started to roll out the Android Oreo update to its flagship LG G5 smartphone that was introduced two years ago. A host of devices from LG recently received the Android Oreo update and now it is turn for the two-year-old LG G5. Notably, the LG G5 was launched with Android Marshmallow in 2016. It later received the Android 7.1.2 Nougat update last year and now it is receiving the Oreo update in South Korea. The news has been confirmed by users on the XDA Developers LG G5 forum page.

The LG G5 with model numbers F700S and F700K have started receiving the Oreo update that comes with build number 30D Oreo KDZ. The update brings all the new features that are available on Android Oreo powered smartphones like notification dots, picture-in-picture mode, background optimizations, adaptive app icons and more.

The update comes with a size of 168MB and as per the official changelog, LG has added Sony LDAC codec for Bluetooth usage, notification badges, improved app settings layout, some tweaks to the home and app drawer and stability improvements.

Notably, since it has been two years since the release of the LG G5 and it is receiving its second major Android update, it is safe to assume that this is going to be last major update for this device and the company is unlikely to roll out the Android 9 Pie update in the future. LG usually provides software and security updates for a span of 2 years after the launch of a smartphone.

Earlier in the year, LG also announced that it has set up a software rollout center to facilitate faster rollout of software and security updates to its flagship and non-flagship devices. The software center seems to be working quite well as we have seen a plethora of LG devices like LG Q6, LG V20, and the LG V30 to receive the Android Oreo update.  It is also likely that the company will roll out Android 9 Pie update to the latest LG G7 ThinQ flagship device soon.
